Share Share Dr. Dale Carpenter an assistant project scientist in UC Irvine’s Department of Ophthalmology and is a specialist in the Herpes Simplex Virus Type 1 (HSV-1).

Currently, Dr. Carpenter is working on a research project with Dr. Steven Wechsler to identify how the virus becomes latent or inactive in the body, how it reactivates, and how it flares up again – or recurs.   Recurrent ocular HSV-1 infection (herpes infection of the eye) is a major cause of viral induced blindness.  In the United States, ocular HSV‑1 is a leading cause of corneal blindness, with more than 500,000 individuals having a clinical history of recurrent ocular herpes.
