New Procedure for Glaucoma
There is a new procedure to lower the intraocular pressure using an instrument called the Trabectome (NeoMedix Inc). The procedure opens a direct pathway for aqueous fluid to flow from the anterior chamber directly into the drainage system called Schlemm's canal. A study involving 101 patients with open angle glaucoma that were treated with the Trabectome procedure showed that they had a statistically significant drop in intraocular pressures. Another recent study of 304 patients that had glaucoma and cataract surgery, also showed a significant drop in the intraocular pressure and minimal complications with this technique. This novel technique is minimally invasive and an effective glaucoma surgery for the future. |
