Any New Treatments?
Share Share Research on new treatments for AMD is underway all around the world and The Discovery Eye Foundation(DEF) is leading the way.

The Genetics of AMD. DEF is currently funding research lead by M. Cristina Kenney, M.D., Ph.D., at UC Irvine, to identify genes involved in Age-related Macular Degeneration and to investigate the ways specific genes affect the clinical outcome and response to treatment of individual patients. The hope is to be able to tailor specific treatments to those who will benefit most from genetic therapy.

Retinal Regeneration Programs for Age-Related Macular Degeneration and Retinitis Pigmentosa. Retinal regeneration is a new and innovative approach to help replace damaged retinal cells using non-embryonic stem cells and other modalities to prevent vision loss and facilitate the restoration of lost vision.

DEF, in collaboration with The Lincy Foundation, are the principal supporters of the newly formed Retinal Regeneration Program at University of California, Irvine.  What makes this so exciting is that it is truly a multi-national, multi-institutional collaborative effort.

The organizations involved are:

  • The University of California, Irvine
  • Harvard University
  • The University of Louisville
  • The University of Lunds (Sweden)
  • The Eye Pathology Institute, University of Copenhagen
  • The University of Missouri, Columbia
  • The Massachusetts Institute of Technology
  • The University of California, San Francisco
  • Boston University
  • Yale University
  • Case Western Reserve University
