What is retinitis pigmentosa?

Retinitis pigmentosa (RP) refers to a group of inherited diseases causing retinal degeneration.

RP is an inherited eye disease, mainly caused by mutated genes inherited from one or both parents. There are many different gene mutations that exist in RP.

While the most common standard therapy for RP has been pharmacologic treatments under medical supervision with a vitamin A palmitate supplement but there is some controversy as to the success of this therapy.
